TURNING A PASSION INTO A PROFESSION
THE STORY OF TUHURA MTB
Meet you Coach & Guide: Chris Wood
Qualifications:
I'm Chris Wood, I was born & raised in the West Midlands, I've always enjoyed the outdoors and Mountain biking has been a passion of mine for over a decade.
When I moved with my family to Cannock Chase in 2011, I was able to immerse myself more fully into the sport. As the years went by I knew that I wanted riding to be more than a hobby and play a bigger part in my life.
I wanted to share it with others and enable them to feel the release that comes from riding the open countryside.
Even more than that, I wanted to encourage the younger generations to take up riding, whilst also appreciating the safety aspects involved - in other words how to get the best out of your bike and yourself when you’re in the saddle.
The year 2020 brought a LOT of changes for everyone, including myself and encouraged by my family, I decided it was time to “live the dream” and set up TUHURA MTB.
I am a qaulified coach and ride leader with both MIAS (Mountain Bike Instuctor Award Scheme) and ABCC (Association of British Cycling Coaches) to MBL 2 (Technical Terrain) level, I am also FIrst Aid trained, have an upto date DBS check and NSPCC safeguarding children and young people in sport certificate.
Tuhura comes from the Maori word meaning “Explore” and I thought it suited perfectly what I was trying to achieve.
TUHURA MTB is about much more than just getting on your bike. It aims to teach you how to get the best from yourself. People ride for many different reasons, not just for pleasure. I have found riding is a cathartic way to deal with depression and the anxieties of daily life. My hope is that anyone who comes on one of my rides will not only have a great day out, get fit and meet new people, but also find themselves in a safe space where they can share on a more personal level with others who may be going through a similar situation.
My hope is that people of all ages and abilities, from all walks of life, will benefit from what I have to share with them and that every individual will take away something positive and long lasting from their experience.
